As I sit and reflect on my favorite scotch—the bottle now empty, much to my dismay—I can’t help but think about its distinctive characteristics. There’s a harshness to it, a sharpness that hits the back of the throat, and a smoky aroma that lingers. The scent is unmistakable, and opening the bottle always transports me to a familiar, comforting place.

This got me thinking about how certain smells stay with us, deeply etched in our memories. I think back to my time in China, a couple of weeks spent exploring the streets before the Olympics. The air was thick with the smells of fried onions, oils, and a medley of street food aromas. To this day, when I cook my son his favorite ramen breakfast, using the soy sauce I brought back from China, the smell takes me right back to those vibrant streets. There’s something magical about how scent can transport us.

Smell is a powerful thing, tied so intricately to memory. It’s difficult to replicate that sensation, but when you nail it, the experience is spot on. It got me wondering—could AI ever truly recreate the complexity of scent? Could it create something as personal and specific as a memory-triggering perfume? While it may take significant training and development, I believe AI has the potential to redefine how we think about scent creation.

Imagine prompting an AI to design the perfect perfume for an evening out, down to every last note. The global perfume industry is enormous, with billions spent annually on fragrances. It’s an investment of emotion as much as it is about luxury. Personally, I’m not a fan of perfumes, but I do love the smell of food, the change of seasons, and nature itself—the crisp autumn leaves, the fresh bloom of spring, or the briny tang of saltwater at the beach.

Scent is powerful. Could AI get to the point where it can craft aromas? I believe so. I once worked with a perfume company on a website project, and they were constantly blending new scents, using a mix of science, technology, and chemistry. This is where AI could thrive—collaborating with human intuition and creativity to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

We’re on the cusp of something incredible, and I’m excited to see where it takes us. After all, if AI can replicate the perfect scent or evoke a cherished memory, the possibilities are endless.
